Synergy – how to use one keyboard and mouse with multiple computers.
Don’t you just love it when you find something that has a huge positive impact on the way you do things?
I’ve just found Synergy+ (Synergy-plus) which lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers.
It’s done through a LAN connection, no need for special hardware.
Big deal? Yes, when you find out that it works between Windows, Mac and Linux. And that you can copy and paste text between each!
Installation is fairly straight-forward and there’s a user interface to set things up properly.
Use Synergy+ for Windows (it works on my Windows 7 PC) and SynergyKM for Mac (it works on my MacBook with Snow Leopard).
Here’s a shot of my workspace – monitor on left powered by a MacBook, 2 monitors on right powered by a PC, 1 keyboard & mouse for all 3.
Downside? Moving from far left to far right takes a couple of swipes!

Great little post, Chris. I have seen Synergy before but never bothered to get it setup, I may just give it a go. Great excuse to buy some new monitors!!!

Thanks Simon, I keep sitting at my desk moving the cursor from PC-Mac-PC… Awesome!
Does it work if I am using a laptop, with a desktop next to it?
Yes it does. Be aware of the screen size difference though.
